Friday Word Day

Friday is here, and I am so excited for the weekend! Lately, I have been really digging gray clothing. It's not only my favorite color (Johns favorite too!) but it is also flattering for all skin tones and very easy to pair or layer. Here are some of my gray-clothing inspirations:

Word of the Day- I have a little twist for the day! Here is the difference between Grey and Gray!

* Grey and Gray are really interchangeable, but GrEy is the English spelling, and GrAy is the American spelling! The only thing I really found that had the two spellings with different meaning was that Grey represents the actual color, while Gray is more of the sliding scale of color between black and white.

Lemon- Bok Choy- Apple Salad

Doesn't this salad look delicious?
I really want to start cooking more with Miso, so I started looking at creative recipes for inspiration... and this salad practically had my name on it! It is a perfect dish to make in summer, as it involves fairly simple preparation, and absolutely no cooking required.
The best part is,  you can make the dressing ahead of time and have it on hand whenever you are ready to make the salad.

Here is the recipes link from Shockingly Delicious if you want to add it to your recipe repertoire!

Stay Safe in the Shade

OK everybody, time to take cover under something shady! Today is supposed to be the beginning of another heat wave in the West, Midwest and East Coast.

Here are some tips on staying safe in the sun from Refinery 29 that I thought were really great...please check them out, and remember to stay hydrated, sun-screened and shaded!

A Pick-Me-Up

Today, I am so sleepy! I was tossing and turning till the wee hours last night, which made waking up this morning a bit of a challenge. I may just need a midday pick me up to keep my energy and spirit going... here are a few things that always help my sleepy days:

Iced Coffee
A small bowl of mixed (unsalted) nuts
 Some yummy chap-stick
Going for a short, brisk walk

And, when I finally arrive back home:

Pouring a glass of wine, put my feet up, and enjoying the moment. Won't you join me?

Our Deepest Fear

Hello Monday friends! I hope you had a wonderful weekend... A friend of mine lent me a book a few days ago. It is Karyn Calabrese newest book, Soak Your Nuts. Yes, the name may sound funny, but the book is really great- and you should be soaking your nuts to get the most out of them, so it's a great reminder! Here is a quote Karyn included that I really enjoyed:

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?
Actually who are you not to be? You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people won't feel unsure around you.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

Friday Word Day

Aloha Friday friends! What  are you up to this weekend? I think John and I will be riding around the city tonight, and maybe stopping for a beer at Sheffields (local bar/beer garden!).

Other things on my agenda:
  • Make that Lavender Lemondade (check previous post!) and finish my book.
  • Grocery shop - just in case we have a last-minute dinner party! Here are some tips for throwing a quick if you need them too!
  • Pick up some flowers for the apartment...just for a pop of color!
  • Watch a show-  Have you seen the new season of What Not To Wear, on TLC? If not, you should because it is so good- and I mean good as in, a perfect no think, fun to watch TV show.

Hopefully the weather will stay cooler, and I can spend most of the weekend outside... If you are in the East Coast heat-wave, please stay hydrated, and hopefully you will feel the cool thoughts and energy I'll be sending your way!

Friday Word:

Evanesce- to dissipate like vapor.

*Symonyms: dissolve, evaporate, melt

Bagel Time

I don't know what it is about a bagel and cream cheese. It is so simple, yet so delicious!
What can I say, bagels just make me happy, and making them
from scratch is something I plan on tackling this summer.
Good Ol' Emeril Lagasse
has a great bagel recipe that seems to be simple enough.
I also found a blog (Baking misadventures) that had very
thorough directions as well.
If you want to tackle "the bagel" with me, here is Emeril's directions
and
Backing Misadventures directions!

Lavender Lemonade

The last week  here in Chicago has been Hot Hot Hot! So hot in fact, I spent Saturday throwing up after a heat-induced migraine!  Obviously, hydration plays a big role in staying cool, and water is great, but sometimes there is a need for something different...something sweet, tart, and thirst quenching.

I've stumbled upon this Lavender Lemonade recipe from the blog, A Pastry Affair, and cannot wait to make it! This is probably not normal, but I do have a rather large bag of dried lavender at home, and think infusing it in lemonade would be a perfect way to use it!

Let me know if you make it, and what you think of the recipe

Bamboo Plants

A few years ago, I was given a bamboo plant as a gift of thanks. The real beauty of this plant (besides the lush green leaves) is in the upkeep- as in, there is very little you need to do to keep the plant alive...and no need for soil! This plant can live with a few rocks, or just in a bit of water. If you are looking for a plant, I highly suggest bamboo for your home, office or as a gift to a friend.

Oh yeah! I almost forgot this great article I read on Bamboo from the New York Times... if you have some time for an interesting read, check  it out!

(look at how happy these Pandas are in the Bamboo!)

Friday Word Day

Friday is here, and I don't know about you, but I for one am ready for the weekend! John and I will be at The Taste of Randoph tonight with some friends, and I cannot wait to eat yummy food from local restaurants. Summer in Chicago has to be the best place in the World, and all of the street festivals just make it that much sweeter.

Sunday is Fathers day, and I will be spending the day with John's family. My Father has passed, but I have found, that even after loved ones have left this Earth, it is never too late to love and celebrate that relationship.

I love you Dad, Happy Fathers Day

Friday Word:

Cherish- to feel passion, devotion, or tenderness for.

*Synonyms: adore, worship, love

Rumchata

Last weekend (at the 21st birthday bash) I was introduced to a new drink. We were taking them as shots, and lordy were they delicious! The liquor is a marriage of the Mexican rice drink, horchata, and rum.- aka: RumChata! Have you tried this yet?
KB (John's Mama) is thoroughly obsessed and it's hard to blame her after trying this yummy mix!
Here is a great RumChata happy hour drink that I cannot wait to make for KB the next time I see her!

Momma Latte
  • 2 parts RumChata
  • 1 part skim milk
  • 2 parts patron xo cafe (or bitter coffee like you would make for iced coffee)
  • Tequila (optional)
Mix up really well and enjoy!

DIY Sweater Blanket

Have any old sweaters that you don't wear anymore and do not know what to do with?
As I was going through my closet the other day, I found a few items of clothing that I do not wear, but still do not want to part with... This DIY sweater blanket (from this super cute blog) is my perfect solution! Wouldn't this be great on a bed or across your couch? Really, it could be used in any room and I cannot wait to start mine! Here are the steps I will be following, and hope you do as well!

Zoobiquity

As I was getting ready this morning, my local public radio station interviewed the writers of Zoobiquity. As they take a look at the similarities between common diseases that plague both humans and animals, I am in awe of the found similarities.
From obese dragonflies, to drug addicted wallabies, this book seems to cover more than what's fathomable. If anything, it is a great reminder of our belonging to the animal kingdom, and the lessons we can learn from our earthly friends.
Check out their website for more information on the book!

Friday Word Day

Hello my friends and Happy Friday!
This weekend, John is going to a bachelor party and I am going to a 21st birthday... Needless to say, it should end up as a weekend worth remembering!

My goal for this weekend is to visit one of Chicago's many weekend festivals, as I have not been able to wander around any yet this summer.

What is your weekend goal?

"You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream." -C.S. Lewis

OK, here is the Friday Word!

Gesticulate- to make gestures; instead of speaking or to emphasize one's words

*Synonyms: motion, gesture, perform

Adult Root Beer Floats

Today is beautiful in Chicago. The birds are chirping, the sun is warm and the breeze is cool. If I could be anywhere right now, it would be on a porch with my family, friends and John. I would make us all Adult Root Beer Floats...

Julianna's Root Beer Floats
  • A shot (2 if you want!) of vanilla vodka
  • Ice (or vanilla ice cream)
  • A few cherries (garnish)
  • Your favorite root beer
  • A straw
-There is the low calorie and the high calorie way of making this drink. I will have my higher calorie recipe in parenthesis!
- Pour vodka over ice (or ice cream) in glass of your choice. Pour root beer over top and add cherries. Grab your straw and (if you would like, add some whipped topping)...enjoy!

American Grown

Have you seen Michelle Obama's new book, American Grown?

It covers the start of the White House public garden, why Mrs. Obama started her healthy lifestyle initiatives and also includes other American gardening stories along the way.
Michelle is not just Americas First Lady. She is an inspiration.
I cannot wait to get this book for my coffee table!

Cilantro Coleslaw

John and I were watching a cooking show this week and one of the sides made was a cilantro coleslaw...now, John has a bit of an obsession with cilantro and I happen to love coleslaw. If I make it to the grocery store today, I will be adding this to our dinner menu!

Cilantro and Lime Coleslaw

Ingredients

  • 1 head Savoy cabbage
  • 4 scallions
  • 1/2 bunch fresh cilantro, torn
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 limes
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper

Directions

Shave the cabbage with a sharp knife or mandoline so you have thin ribbons. Cut the scallions long and on the bias so you have pieces similar in shape to the cabbage. Toss the cabbage, scallions and cilantro in a large salad bowl.
Make the dressing by combining the sour creammayonnaise, sugar and the zest of the limes in a medium bowl. Season with salt and pepper and finish with a squeeze of lime juice. Pour the dressing over the cabbage mixture and toss to combine.

Rhubarb Scones

OH MY GOSH! Can we just talk about how amazing these scones look from Food 52?
I have never really baked with rhubarb before, but I really need to start. Maybe this recipe will be the one that breaks me in!

Too quickly, things in life can become so complex and complicated.... it's all too easy to forget about those little things in life that always do what they are supposed to do. Here are a few reliable products I love that have made my Friday a little brighter!

With whatever you may be doing today and through the weekend, please do enjoy the little things, that make everything a little bit better.

Here is your Friday Word!
